Best Father’s Day gift ever: Son finds GTO for ailing father
And much rubber was burnt that day. When Jim Sharp put out the request earlier this month for a red 1967 Pontiac GTO to make for a very special Father’s Day gift for his dad, Ken, responses came pouring in, and thanks to a very generous GTO owner, Ken was able to spend the day reliving cherished memories.
Those who saw the request here on Hemmings may recall that Ken owned a red 1967 GTO when he was younger, driving it from California to Wisconsin, where he met his wife, settled down, and started a family. He had to eventually sell the Goat, but it remained a fixture in family lore, so Jim tossed around the idea of finding a GTO like his father’s and restoring it with him. After Ken developed terminal cancer, however, Jim scaled back those plans to renting a red GTO for Ken to use for a day.
One of the many responses came from Joe and Kristine Kahn of Gurnee, Illinois – about an hour away from Ken – who offered their two red 1967 GTOs at no charge and for as long as Ken liked. Joe also told Jim that he expected Ken to get on it and drive it like a GTO should be driven. This past Friday, Ken did exactly that after Jim and the rest of his family surprised Ken with the GTO after his weekly treatments at the cancer clinic.
“My dad was just like a little kid again, driving everywhere, burning rubber out on back country roads and just sitting in it telling stories about 1969 and driving out here from California,” Jim said. “It was such a sight to see and a memory that we will never forget!”
Ken, who wore a t-shirt that read “Live for today,” couldn’t have been more pleased. “It was like back in 1969 when I bought it,” he told the Janesville Gazette.
